There is an old Nicaraguan proverb that says, "Eyes that see do not grow old." Lovely sentiment, however most of us can barely spell Nicaragua, let alone subscribe to that way of thinking. The reality is that while you
might not feel much different than you did at twenty-something, that isn't what the outside world sees. And why should you look any different than you feel? The good news is you don't have to, if you don't want to.
At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery, we know how to make your outer beauty shine as brightly as your inner beauty. You don't want to look like a different person and Dr. Shumway gets that. You want to look like yourself - but a more refreshed and relaxed version.
As we age, tiny fat deposits can begin to appear around the eyes and skin begins to lose its elasticity. This can result in excess skin around the eyes, wrinkles, puffiness and those under-the-eye "bags."
Luckily an Eyelid Lift-also known as Blepharoplasty or Eyelid 'Rejuvenation' Surgery-is a very successful way to correct these problems. The procedure involves removing the fatty deposits and potentially small amounts of muscle and skin around the eyes. The result? Looking rested, refreshed and alert.
Blepharoplasty may also be performed to treat Ptosis-a medical condition where the eyelids droop because of weak muscles or nerve damage. This condition causes the eyelids to sag and obstruct vision.
There are many reasons that you might opt for an Eyelid Lift: puffy eyelids, excess eyelid skin, under eye bags, impaired vision. Whatever the reason, it's very important that you have realistic expectations and are in good physical health.
Many surgeons agree that the "ideal" age for Blepharoplasty patients is 35 or older-however, an Eye Lift may be appropriate for younger patients in certain circumstances.
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery specializes in the aesthetic enhancement of our patients. We do this through laser and cosmetic surgery procedures performed in our La Jolla office. La Jolla is in the San Diego area of beautiful Southern California.
Dr. Robert A. Shumway, M.D. FACS is an expert in the field of cosmetic surgery. He has studied at the nation's most prestigious medical centers and has taught cosmetic surgery techniques at Duke, UCLA and UCSD. As a trustee of the California Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, he stresses the importance of the healing process-carefully instructing his patients on post-operative care.
For an Upper Eyelid Lift, incisions are made on the natural folds and creases of the lids. Excess fat, muscle, and extra skin are removed through the incisions. Tiny sutures are used to close up the incisions.
In Lower Eyelid Surgery, the procedure is similar, although incisions are made along the lashline or inside the lower eyelid.
After your Eyelid Lift, you can expect to experience some swelling, numbness, and bruising. Some patients also report mild to heavy tearing, double vision, and sensitivity to light.
As time goes by and you continue to heal, it is important that you protect your eyes from the sun-now you have an excuse to buy those designer sunglasses you've been eyeing! Scarring may take three to six months to fade.
The first step in the process is to schedule a consultation in our La Jolla office with Dr. Shumway. During this visit, Dr. Shumway will explore your concerns, discover your needs and discuss your options. You will also have an opportunity to look at "before" and "after" photos of many of Dr. Shumway's other Blepharoplasty patients.
Dr. Shumway always evaluates each patient personally and considers techniques that will provide exceptional results with minimal down time
