Symmetry. Harmony. Balance. Words that describe agreement, satisfaction and a state of calm. It's probably no surprise, that people lacking balance in their features often don't feel that sense of peace or satisfaction with their looks.
Maybe it's the aging process that has softened your facial features-or you inherited a "weak" chin from your dad's side of the family-or you're having a facelift and want a chin implant to balance out your "new look." Whatever the reason, cheek or chin implants can add subtle balance to your features and leave you with a youthfully contoured face.
Cheek or Chin implants are used to improve your appearance by creating balance in the face. Whether done as a stand-alone procedure or with another surgery such as a facelift-implants can be used to strengthen a jawline, make other features look more proportionate and balanced, or bring youthful angles to the face.
Shumway Cosmetic Surgery also offers a non-surgical alternative to implants-injections of Radiesse, Restylane or Juvederm-as a way to contour the cheeks or chin.
The best candidates for cheek or chin implants are those who are in good physical and emotional health. As with all cosmetic surgeries, a patient needs to have reasonable expectations. If this sounds like you, the next step would be to schedule a consultation with Dr. Shumway at our La Jolla office in the San Diego area.

The decision to undergo a cheek or chin implant is a highly personal one. Dr. Shumway will meet with you personally and provide you with the information you need to make the best decisions about your surgery and recovery.
A cheek or chin implant typically takes under an hour to perform. A small incision is made inside the mouth and the appropriate implant is put in place. After the procedure, a dressing will be put in place to minimize swelling and ease discomfort.
Injectible fillers can be used instead of implants to define your chin or cheeks and improve facial balance. At Shumway Cosmetic Surgery you have three options: Radiesse, Restylane or Juvederm. These are not a permanent solution-Radiesse results last from 1 to 2 years; the effects of Restylane and Juvederm last at least 6 months.
Patients who undergo a chin or cheek implant typically have a fairly rapid recovery. During the first few days after surgery, you may experience swelling and difficulty talking and/or moving your face. This should settle down quickly. Most people can return to work within 1 to 2 weeks.
The result of a chin or cheek implant will vary greatly depending on the patient. Also, it may take several months before you see the full effects of your new look. End results and expectations will be discussed at length in your consultation with Dr. Shumway.
One great thing to note: Shumway Cosmetic Surgery performs chin and cheek implant surgery through the mouth, so there are no telltale scars! People will notice the new and improved you-not your implants.
Scheduling a consultation is the next step in the process. Dr. Shumway will meet with you in our La Jolla office to hear your concerns and provide you with his expert medical guidance. This consultation time is where he will identify where there is room for improvement, and determine the safest and most effective way to achieve the results you desire.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view before and after photos of Dr. Shumway's chin and cheek implant patients.
