Every day thousands of our cells die and are replaced with new cells from beneath the skin. As we age, this skin cell replacement process slows leaving us with dull, aged skin. A chemical peel is a process in which a chemical solution is applied to the skin to remove the outer, damaged layers in a controlled manner. The skin below appears tighter and more youthful. The Micropeel and Micropeel Plus is designed for patients seeking a more superficial peel, requiring no down time and is often referred to as the "lunch-break peel." Chemical peels are stronger yet but are customized to the skin type and goals of the patient. Dr. Shumway will advise you on what type of peel will help you reach your desired results.
MicroPeel is a safe and effective three-step process to more youthful skin. First, dead cellular layers of the skin are removed through dermaplaning. Next, an alpha hydroxy acid solution is applied to the skin. After the desired level of exfoliation is achieved, the acid is neutralized. The third step is a skin cooling process called cryogenic therapy which immediately removes inflammation and cools the skin. You will notice incremental improvements in the appearance of your skin with each MicroPeel. There is no downtime following a MicroPeel. Some patients report some minor peeling for a few days following the procedure.
The MicroPeel Plus is designed to refine skin texture damaged by the sun and various skin conditions such as acne. This procedure is available in two concentrations of salicylic acid customized to your skin type and goals. After cleansing the skin, the MicroPeel Plus solution is applied to the skin. After two to three minutes the skin is rinsed. Most patients experience some mild peeling two to four days following the procedure for a brief time. Our patients are happy when they discover after several treatments, that their fine lines and discolorations have been replaced with smoother, more youthful skin.
A chemical peel is a procedure in which a customized chemical solution containing Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) and/or glycolic acid at specific concentrations is applied to the skin. This procedure causes a medium or intermediate depth peel as well as the formation of new collagen in the underlying skin. Peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands. A chemical peel is designed to treat fine lines and wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, shallow acne scars, sun-damaged skin, age spots and freckling. Depending on your particular needs and skin type, Dr. Shumway will recommend a superficial, medium or deep chemical peel and will select the proper blend of chemicals to accomplish your goals. Because the chemical peel is a much deeper peel, IV sedation is sometimes recommended. After the procedure, the skin may be reddish in color, similar to a moderate sunburn and will gradually fade to pink over the next few weeks. Soon thereafter our patients report they are thrilled and are enjoying the benefits of a more youthful, attractive appearance.
