A breast implant is a silicone shell filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel. How is the Procedure Performed?
There are four common breast implantation surgical approaches, each named after the site of the incision. Dr. Shumway is internationally known for his expertise in the revolutionary procedure called Transumbilical Breast Augmentation or TUBA whereby the breast implants are inserted through a very small incision concealed inside the navel. Dr. Shumway also performs breast augmentation by the transaxillary method (armpit), periareolar method (around the nipple) and though the inframammary fold approach (beneath the breast). Although Dr. Shumway performs all four breast implant approaches, the majority of his patients choose the TUBA approach. Dr. Shumway will fully discuss each method at your consultation and help you choose the approach best suited for you.
Recovering from Breast Enhancement
Rest is recommended for the first few days following surgery. A post-surgical sports bra is typically worn for the first few weeks. Most discomfort associated with the breast surgery will be well-controlled with the oral pain medication prescribed by Dr. Shumway. Antibiotics will also be prescribed. Most patients report only mild swelling, bruising and tenderness following the surgery. Many patients return to work within three days and resume their normal activities within four to six weeks.
