Post-Op Instructions

1. Follow all instructions given to you by Dr. Shumway and his staff. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the office at 858-587-2640.

2. Rest on the day of surgery. It is important to postpone your regular activities for a few days to give your body time to rest and recover. You may take a walk the day after surgery and slowly resume your normal activities as you feel you are able and as Dr. Shumway directs.

3. You may feel dizzy, lightheaded or sleepy for 12 to 24 hours after your procedure. This is a perfectly normal sensation. However, you should not drive or operate any mechanical or electrical device until this feeling has worn off.

4. You should not sign any important documents or make important decisions for 24 hours following your procedure.

5. Drink plenty of clear liquids and follow a sensible eating plan (soft foods that are easily digested the first couple of days: yogurt, dairy products high in protein, soups, fruit smoothies, toast, etc.). Do not drink alcoholic beverages including beer and wine for the first 72 hours.

6. You may experience some nausea and vomiting during your ride home. This is a common occurrence and is normal for many patients. If the nausea does not subside within 6 hours, please contact our office. You will also experience some discomfort and pain following your procedure. Use Extra-Strength Tylenol (500 mg tablets) or pain relievers as prescribed by the doctor. It is recommended that you eat something light before taking any pain medication (and/or other medications like antibiotics) to prevent upset stomach or nausea.

7. Make and keep follow-up appointments! Report temperature elevations over 100 degrees F. If you have a dressing, follow the doctor's instructions. Generally, keep dressings dry and in place until instructed to remove.
