Because of the rising popularity of cosmetic surgery, it is vital that as a potential patient, you know and understand the facts about choosing a surgeon. Some questions to keep in mind are as follows:

  • Where was the surgeon trained?
  • In what disciplines is he/she board certified?
  • What is the surgeon's training with regard to the specific cosmetic surgery procedure you are considering?
  • How many times has he/she performed the specific cosmetic procedure you are considering?

You also may want to include the following when discussing your options with your surgeon during your cosmetic procedure consultation:

  • Asking to see before and after photos of the surgeon's results.
  • Discussion of the various options regarding the manner in which to achieve your desired outcome.
  • The manner and type of anesthesia used to perform your chosen procedure.
  • Ask where your surgery will be performed- and if the facility is accredited.
  • Establish a comfort level and rapport with both the physician and office staff.

Keep in mind that a cosmetic surgeons' original disciplines and certifications may be in dermatology, head and neck surgery, general surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ocular plastic surgery, and a variety of other surgical disciplines. Training in cosmetic surgery is mainly received after a physician completes a residency in his or her underlying discipline. Some physicians may have gone on to post-graduate training and taken a board examination specifically in cosmetic surgery administered by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
